It was now mid-February, 1981 and our trip to Haiti was behind us. We were back in the loft in New York City. My wings, which had spread so broad under the Caribbean sun, were clipped once more. I was back in my cage. I fell into depression from being stuck in loft with dod nearly 24/7.
Canal Street seemed even dirtier and more chaotic than when we had left, but it probably was just the shocking contrast from the clear blue skies we had so recently left. My only solace was that I would be back at AIDI for my leg lengthening procedure by early spring. So, I just focused on the passing of the days, using the mental markers of dates, times, and locations to get through it. I reassured myself that it wasn’t too long to wait…
