I am both happy and sad at the same time, and I’m still trying to figure out how that could be. ― Stephen Chbosky, The Perks of Being a Wallflower

We stayed in the downtown studio/apartment through the end of the summer of 1973. Although my mother loved the layout of the place, the winter was too challenging there. The heating system was very expensive and did not keep the house warm consistently. So, we moved yet again. Alice got her own place with Greta and my mother found a cute house to rent on Mill Hill Lane, just a few blocks, in a different direction, from downtown Chatham.
The melodic nature of the name — mill • hill • lane — has stuck with me after all these years even when others have faded away. The house we rented was small, wooden, and set back from the main road down a dirt lane. It was heavily wooded all around; hidden from the main road.
